I was born in Changsha, Hunan and studied my undergraduate degree in Central South University, which is one of the top 20 universities in China. I came to the UK in 2010 to study my Master degree in Design Management in University of Southampton. Because of my grades in my undergraduate degree, I was awarded an Entrance Scholarship.
After my Master Degree, I gained PSW visa to start my career in the UK. Initially, I did an internship that was related to design where I can use my skills and knowledge at the software design company. In the internship, I helped redesigning the communication equipment icons.
Most of my work experience after the internship was as a sales assistant at various brands. I learned a lot of in the area of customer service, communication skills, goods presentation and brand management. The workload can get heavy at times and very busy, but I was able to meet our sales target and expectations.
I returned to China once my PSW visa expired but I was able to immediately find a job in the head office at the largest department store company in Hunan Province. The department I worked under was called “Brand Development”, with 28 staff members. My responsibilities included administrative duties as well as receiving and hosting guests. Having worked both in the UK and China has been a very beneficial experience, particularly in a career involving these two countries.
I was able to come back to the UK on a Spouse Visa. I worked in a restaurant in London which belong to my mother-in-law but moved to Cambridge once my husband changed his job.
Since I have studied design, I am able to help with work in design and I have many friends who are still in this area of work. I also believe that I am good at customer service and product sales. I still have a good relationship with the management team of the department store company I worked for and I can help UK businesses expand to the Chinese market.
